intro blog

Hi  all, my name is Seleyna Nichols, and I am a freshman. I am originally from upstate New York. Growing up I listened to many genres of music, I owe this to the fact that I danced my whole life. I started out dancing at six years old as a ballet and tap dancer. I outgrew these types of dance, and quickly moved on to modern, hiphop, jazz, and lyrical. In the beginning years of my dance career I also played piano. Although I  did not enjoy playing music as much as I do listening and moving to it, I will always hold a special place in my heart for the art. I am thankful for my experiences that I gained playing the piano. It taught me various things, such as how to read music, to conquer difficult tasks, and to not give up.

As I stated before I grew up in upstate New York. I grew up in a small town named Oneonta. I had lived 90 percent of my life there, but I knew that I could not be the best version of myself if I had stayed there. I loved my small town, but since I grew up traveling all over the world I could not wait to leave.I have traveled to London a handful of times, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, and many states. My favorite vacation was Jamaica. I enjoyed Jamaica because I was at the age where I could fully take in the culture, different tastes, and have a little more leisure from my mom. Leaving for college was the best decision I made, although it was tougher than anticipated.

This summer I enjoyed a lot of nostalgic tunes, since I had just graduated high school and wanted to soak in every memory I had of my childhood, but I also enjoyed a lot of new music. While driving around my hometown I enjoyed listening to Zach Bryan's new album. His new album " The Great American Bar Scene" was released in July this past summer. My favorite song from this album is "28".

A piece of music that holds a special place in my heart is "Forever Young" by Allphaville. This piece is dearly special to me because it was my dads favorite song. For my senior solo I danced to a variation of this song. I do not have many memories with my dad, but I will never forget his favorite song. Not only is this song a memory of him I hold onto, but I also really do enjoy this song on my own.
A piece of music I do not really enjoy or connect with is rock.I have never really gotten into it, nor was i really exposed to it as a adolescent. Maybe if i had been exposed to it when I was younger I would enjoy or connect to it, but again I was not. I picked "Smell Like Teen Spirit " by Nirvana to showcase this.

  1. I also played the piano as well, which is interesting! I also listened to a lot of Zack Bryan this summer, more his old stuff but also his new stuff, as well! My favorite song is probably I remember everything by Zack Bryan.

  2. Hi Seleyna! I completely agree with what you were saying about Zach Bryan. I also definitely have a lot of nostalgia when listening to his songs. I agree with you not connecting to rock. I can listen to a few songs, but it is not something I can listen to consistently.
