Music and Gender

When I was a little girl I grew up listening to a lot of pop, or what was just playing on the radio. I ended up listening to a lot of Taylor Swift. As I have grown up I have stopped listening to her as much and drifted away from her music, but I still listen to a few of her songs here and there. One of my very first purchases was her original 1989 album. I would beg my mom to play it each car ride and I would stay in the car even after the car ride ended. As I grew up and she started to remake her albums, I was first exposed to inequality in music due to gender. I caught a glimpse of how unequal life can be as a woman versus as a man. I know that is a very controversial  topic, and times are changing, this instance holds true to me.

I'm sure some of you know what topic I am going to bring up, but I do think it is important to take a deeper dive as to why I choose this topic. Taylor swift was working with a music producer Scooter Braun previously to 2019, but after she left his reign he pulled numerous stunts to try and stay in control. Taylor left Big Machine Records, where she recorded her first six albums, Scooter was in control of most of her work. Taylor was very unhappy with this, considering she was trying to buy back her own masters. She was later influenced by other female music artists to remake her albums. In the midst of doing this she ran into many roadblocks. While attempting to remake her albums she was also awarded Artist of the Decade from the American Music Awards, and was planning to perform a mashup of her hits at the show. Scooter and Scott Borchetta said that since she was rerecording her songs that she would not be able to perform her old songs at the show. After a lot of back and forth with her new representatives and Big Machine Records, she was given the green light to perform at the AMA’s. She did just that, performed and put a foot in the door for other artists to come forward about their own experiences.

There is so much more about this one incident. I'm sure there are many more just like this one, but not as public. There is a documentary on Netflix that takes an even deeper dive into her experience and battle.

  1. I also grew up listening to Taylor Swift and went to many of her concerts, as well! It was really inspiring when she decided to re record ALL of her songs so that they would be hers. This was a really unfortunate situation, but she made the best out of what her situation was. I feel like it was a really big betrayal to Taylor on Scooter's part, as they had been working together for quite a while.
