Music and Family

For this blog I choose to interview my mom. My mom was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. My mom has fulfilled every role I have ever needed. My mom has my greatest role model and inspiration to do tough and challenging things. We have a larger age gap than most parents and their kids, so we butt heads about certain things, but she has always been my number one supporter and someone I can look up to.

I started out asking her if she even liked music to begin with, she said yes and that her favorite genre is worship music. She does not like heavy metal, I can totally agree with her on this one. Her earliest memory of music is when she was six years old. Elvis Presley, Micheal Jackson,Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, and Aretha Franklin are among the biggest artists when she was growing up. I asked if her parents liked the music she listened to growing up, and she said that her grandfather didn't like the music because he thought it was annoying and scratchy. Growing up she said that music was a huge part of her childhood. The highlight for her was Carnival.

Carnival is a two day event before Ash Wednesday. There are parties leading up to the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The highlight for her was the loud bands of music playing Soca and Calypso. There are food vendors, parades, and steel pan competitions.

This is just a glimpse of what Carnival is like. Many of my family members have told me stories about Carnival, and I hope one day I can go and participate.

Just like my mom, I do also really enjoy listening to Micheal Jackson.

Billie Jean is one of my favorite Micheal Jackson songs. While vacationing in Dominican Republic, my mom and I had an awesome opportunity to see a Micheal Jackson impersonator.

  1. Hey Seleyna ! It is really nice to see that people like you are still listening to Michael Jackson because I do too. I personally think he is the greatest singer of all time, and seeing people from our generation still listening to his songs shows how good he was. Great job !

I could say the same about my mom, who I also interviewed for my blog as well. I also liked how you mentioned Carnival and how they have parades and a lot of music festivals. I've heard so much about Carnival, I bet it's great! Great response Seleyna!

  6. Hey! The most interesting part for me from your blog was hearing about Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival. It sounds like such a fun celebration and I can see why it was such a memorable experience for her. I also enjoyed learning about her admiration for legendary artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin. My favorite selection was Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. This is because of the empersonator you saw during your vacation.

  7. I really loved how you interviewed your mom knowing she has many different music preferences because my mom is the same way. I also really love how your mom highlighted the music from Carnival. Since my parents were also not born and raised in the United States, I can relate to my family members having so many different stories and different cultural experiences that are so special, and I hope to experience as well.
